North Murray Wins its first Varsity Wrestling trophy and takes 3rd at Heritage Duals
• North Murray finished third at the Heritage-Catoosa Thanksgiving Duals, with the Mountaineers topping the Raiders 40-37 in a crossover match to finish the day and determine final places after pool competition.
North Murray recorded wins against Red Bank, Tenn., 53-28, Murray County, 58-18, and North Oconee, 72-12. Elias Lechuga (138 pounds), Ethan Center (170) and Justin Saylor (182) each went 4-1 for the Mountaineers, while Damian Green (160) was 3-1 and Kayla Webb (106) was 3-0.
But Mountaineers coach Steve Colley was also impressed with Zach Penland (132) — who won his only match by pin after trailing 15-4 against Murray County — and Cody Tucker (195), who was some 20 pounds under the limit for his weight class, but helped North Murray by avoiding a pin against Murray County.
John Dunn and Raul Perez also had similar efforts, taking losses instead of pins or technical falls to help the Mountaineers on the scoreboard.
“Those kids fought hard,” Colley said. “Most of the time, they were the first one back to the circle even if they were down. They were hustling back, and you could really tell they were becoming a team today.”
